The third door

“if you’re doing what everybody else is doing, you’re doing it wrong”

When you’re a kid, you’re never afraid to dream, we love attempting to do things, people tell us we are unlikely to do, so you dream of becoming a scientist, becoming an astronaut or even a president. You never question whether it’s possible but as you grow up you’re told that your dreams are too crazy and that what you truly want out of life is unachievable and that you should be realistic. But what we forget is that people’s opinion on what they think is possible means absolutely nothing.

People we spend time with try to rationalize by saying, you don’t have enough resources, you don’t know enough people, YOU JUST CAN’T GET IT DONE!!

Let me tell you its never the lack of resources, its always a lack of resourcefulness

How many times have gone through with the “what I want to do with life crisis”, I know I have

We constantly feel like we are stuck in this rat race, in some ways we are. Stuck in this long traffic , not even knowing where we are headed. how are we supposed to figure out what our career should look like at an age when we are not even old enough to drink legally.

The schools were meant to teach us how we can contribute and make our own mark in the world but instead they just show us how we can fit in it and make us believe that “it is what it is”(which is a very dangerous notion to have in you’re head)

But what if there was a way, a way to make your dreams come true.

you know when you go to a nightclub. there's the main door where everyone has to wait in line then there's a second door for VIPs(the rich folks) and then there’s a third door for the hustlers who don't want to wait they will go around the back and find their own way in. they'll knock on a door a hundred times or pry open a window and walk in through the kitchen and that's how every success story in the book became successful.

The third door is about Alex Ben Ian's five-year quest to interview famous people like Bill Gates, Lady Gaga, Maya Angelou, Warren Buffett and Steve Wozniak in order to uncover their secrets to success.

Alex, one day asked his friends “ guys if we can create our dream University who would be our professors so my friends started calling things out, Bill Gates will teach business, Lady Gaga music, Quincy Jones production, Larry King broadcasting, jane goodall science, maya angelou poetry, mark zuckerberg Tech and we went on and on and on and that became the treasure map for this journey”

The funny thing about this was all the people he dreamed of actually said yes. Every single adventure to get an interview reminded him what was possible.

He was 18 years old, a freshman in college and was going through a life crisis . not only did he not know what he wanted to do with his life but he also had no idea how all the people he looked up to, did the impossible. How did bill gates sell his first piece of software when nobody even knew his name, how did steven Spielberg become the youngest director in the Hollywood history without a single hit under his belt. These are the things, they don’t normally teach you in school. So he did what any person looking for answers would do, went to the library and started ripping through biographies and business books looking for answers but eventually he was left empty handed. So that’s when the naïve 18 year old decided “if no one’s going to write the book I am dreaming of reading, why not write it myself”

Alex was a (18 y/o)student with no money. so how could he spend time researching, traveling and interviewing for months. He was lucky enough to get an invite to the show (the price is right)from an acquaintance who couldn't make it then he studied how to get selected to play and asked people at the show for tips on how to win and it worked. He won thirty one thousand one hundred eighty-eight dollars and that's how he funded the book.

a few years later he employed the same strategy to attend Warren Buffett's annual conference and managed to ask four questions when getting even one question in has a chance of 1 in 1,000.

A common theme throughout the book is the value of mentors. the book chronicles Alex's struggles even though he did succeed in meeting an impressive array of famous people it never looked easy. his mission was full of hard work, constant rejection and many mistakes. by the end he realized that success and failure aren't really opposites but simply the result of trying and that's what matters the most trying Alex made many mistakes on his quest but he often learned more from the mistakes and they were the ones that changed him the most.

Lets take a look at this recent example of someone finding their “third door”

Cold calling and emailing simply don't work no matter how creative your approach, based on a mentors advice Alex sent Warren Buffett's assistant a shoe with a note just trying to get my foot in the door such strategies are often hailed by sales professionals but ultimately their success rate is miniscule and only going down because everyone is employing the same tactics what really works getting back to basics meeting people in person only then can they see that you're genuine and start caring about helping you after speaking with many of the greatest minds alive Alex distilled their success into one common element they didn't follow the prescribed path………

He has changed our perception of what humans thought was possible to accomplish giving hope and most importantly to inspire a new generation of unconventional thinkers and doers.

To anyone out there, trying to figure out who they are and what their passions are. Alex says “don't focus on your passion, just ask yourself what excites me and if you go home every night with a journal and write down what excited me today and then what I learned about myself today after about day 30 you will start seeing a pattern and that pattern is probably your biggest neon sign to your path”

“Doesn’t matter what age you are, figure out your origin story”

What if I told u that there was a way to fly anywhere for free????

So here’s the deal, I’ve been travelling for the past 2 years now and as much as I love it

but paying for tickets anytime I wanna go anywhere really gets expensive, over the last year I have learned a few tips and hacks that can save you a lot of time and money.

I have noticed that while travelling, there’s basically two types of people. One that wants to experience a new place from within the boundaries of their comfort zone, by staying in expensive hotels/resorts and relying solely on MONEY and there are budget travellers mostly students and backpackers that travel on a super low budget, staying in hostels carrying heavy backpacks around and are basically in a constant state of discomfort while accumulating the most fascinating stories.

Nothing can prepare you for living on the road like actually being on the road. After months of backpacking, traveling, and experiencing the lifestyle of a digital nomad myself, I am still learning new tricks every time I hit the road on a new adventure…

Up until last year, I’ve learnt a lot of lessons and I’ve compiled some of them into my 20 best travel tips.

Becoming an expert traveller takes time, but if you’re armed with the right travel tips, tricks, and hacks, and just generally know how to go backpacking, you will have an advantage as you gain new life experiences traveling around the world.

So, in no particular order, let’s get started.

20 BEST TRAVEL TIPS

1. Carry empty water bottles

Things have got rather strict with bottles of liquid recently. Doesn’t matter whether it looks as if the seal been tampered with or not, a bottle with liquid in it is a no go. So, instead of bringing a full bottle, bring an empty bottle to the airport and refill it after you’ve passed through security.

2. Private browsing for cheaper flights

Airlines and travel sites can record your visits by installing cookies on your browser, which can cause the prices you’re shown to rise simply because you’ve searched for those flights before. This is to trick you into buying your flights sooner and encourage impulse buying.Avoid it by switching to ‘Private Browsing’ whenever you book flights.

3. Roll your clothes for more space

One of the most simple but effective travel hacks there is. Rather than folding your clothes, roll them up into a little tube. This will save a ton of space and stop creases and wrinkles – all in all, pretty sweet!

4. Charge your phones through airport or hotel TV

Lost or forgotten your wall plug for your charger? No worries, most modern TVs have a USB connector on the back or side. Simply plug in your electrical device and watch that little battery icon charge.

5. Email yourself all important id proofs and tickets before

You’ll thank yourself if you’re ever a victim of theft or loss. I know I have been once or twice. It’s also worth taking a screenshot of any journey confirmations. If you’ve booked any flights, buses or trains, whether you’re on your phone, laptop or tablet, make sure you screenshot them while you have Wi-Fi or internet access so you can access them when you’re no longer connected. So much easier than lugging around printouts. As travel hacks go, this is one you don’t want to ignore in case anything goes wrong.

6. Mark your bag as fragile

Not only does this mean your bag is more likely to be handled correctly, but it’ll also find itself at the top of pile in the storage compartment of the plane. The result?, you’ll get your bag back first, of course. Jackpot.

7. Only unpack what u need

If you’re backpacking your way across the universe, then it’s likely you won’t be staying in one place for too long.so stop trying to make m look like home and, only take out what you’ll definitely need in each hostel. This will leave you free for a quick and easy escape when you’re next on the verge of missing that bus.

 8. Best cure for jetlag, run it off(don’t go crashing in your bed)

Apparently, a bit of exercise before your trip can stave off the jet lag and leave you feeling fresh as a dais

 9. Skyscanner

Well you can find the best deals on flights on-the-go using the SkyScanner app.(not a paid add, although wouldn’t mind in the future) The world of finding cheap flights can be complicated, but stick with the travel hacks in this article and you’ll have the basics covered in no time.

10.  when you’re not on a busy schedule, consider giving up your seats

OK, it might not look like a cool hack on the surface, giving up your seat on that flight, but it’s true what they say about karma and ‘one good turn’. Volunteer to be bumped from an over-sold flight and you could find yourself reaping all the benefits; free meals, drink and accommodation nearby, then all the comforts of business class when you finally do make it on a flight. I’m not going to complain.

11. travelling to a new country(market researcher)

Free meals, films, drinks; all that kind of stuff. Companies all over the world are looking for people to try out their wares, test their staff and give feedback. It involves very little work and is pretty enjoyable, really, so why not apply to be a market researcher in the country you’re travelling and get all the things for free.

12. free Wi-Fi, earphones, portable charger

Let’s be honest. Wi-Fi is important for travellers. You should know how to find free Wi-Fi (that doesn’t require you to purchase anything to use). Here are some places that nearly always have free Wi-Fi:

Libraries, sometimes coffee shops, McDonald’s and other big fast food chains have free Wi-Fi, Many airports offer free internet connections

When using public Wi-Fi, I highly recommend using a VPN to protect yourself from data thieves. You never know who is on a public Wi-Fi network with zero security.

Also don’t forget your earphones and a portable charger!!!

 13. pack of crayons are better than candles

since you never know what might happen on the road. In an emergency, a full crayon will burn for up to half an hour and provide a pretty impressive light for its size.

14. download offline maps, keep it in handy

Obviously you can’t stick by a WiFi connection while exploring a city, not all that much happens in a Starbucks. Which means you’re going to find it impossible to access live Google Maps. Thankfully, the latest versions of Google Maps now allows you to save map areas directly to your phone and call them up later to explore. Check out how it works.

15. let at least one person know your itinerary

Its always safe to let one other person be aware of your itinerary, the places your staying, the cabs you are in.it can be someone in your family or even a friend but always share these details with someone.

16. take advantage of layovers

If you’re like me and take advantage of awesome flight deals, you may end being stuck in a very long layover. If it’s no extra cost to you, then why not turn it into a couple of days?

I would much rather spend my time exploring a city than being stuck in its airport. Hell, it’d be worth it to me even if I had only a couple of hours. (I once spent a 4-hour layover)

In summation, one of the best airport travel tips I can give to you is don’t stay in them at all. Get out, use your time wisely, and enjoy every moment you can.

17. Camera

I used to hate traveling with a camera because I always thought they were cumbersome, expensive, and, in a way, took away from the raw experience. I opted instead for shitty photos from my camera phone and making imprints in my memory.

After months of traveling, I kinda regret not having a camera all of those months. I could have taken some awesome photos.

Do bring a travel camera with you. It doesn’t have to be the best Canon DSLR on the market – it could be something as simple as a point-and-shoot. The point is you have something to help record all of your amazing adventures.

18. don’t over plan

The essence of backpacking is to let events develop and unfold before you. You need to be open and ready for the curve balls life throws at you. A happy backpacker is one who is organized and driven, yet not obsessive in regards to planning and booking shit. Being flexible is just another characteristic of the expert broke backpacker…

 19. antibiotics

Part of a well-stocked first aid kit should include some basic antibiotics. On a recent trip , I needed antibiotics within a few days of arriving. Instead of having to go to the hospital with a horrible illness, I was able to mitigate the situation by taking antibiotics as soon as I broke out in a fever.

If you did not have time to pick up antibiotics before leaving , absolutely pick some up in the city where you arrive.

20. don’t try to do much, you’ll end up missing stuff in front of you. It will never go exactly according to your plan

We all have one – an epic bucket list of places to go and things to do that we will stop at nothing to complete. As much as we love seeing that lost civilization or unnamed peak, seeing everything is exhausting. By the end of some journeys, you look and feel more like a refugee than an adventurer.

Do yourself a favour and take a break every once in a while. Trying to knock out every single point of interest in a given place is going to wear you out. Then, you probably won’t enjoy them much either.

That’s a top international travel tip from your humble Broke Backpacker. Don’t burn out.

 Other things to remember;

Memorize the location of the place your staying. And have it on you on all times. Make sure bags and any equipment is water proofed

NOW FOR THE MILLION DOLLAR QUESTION THAT U CLICKED ON THIS POST FOR

What if I told u that there was a method to fly anywhere for free?????

Airlines that can give you tickets for your next trip for $0 sounds a little unbelievable but it’s true.

Let me break it down for you.

the first thing to understand is that flights aren't always full. either not all the seats are booked or some people missed their flights and if you're a flight attendant or traveling with one you can ask to be put on standby meaning that if they're still space on the plane right as it's about to leave you can hop on for free…. sounds crazy right…

but there's a catch, you have no guarantee that you can keep the seat until the plane is in the air so if an earlier flight somehow gets cancelled passengers will be transferred and you're out. although it's the cheapest way to travel it's also the riskiest.

You’d be surprised how often u get first class just because they’re the only seats left. for some airlines, the employees such as flight attendants, ramp, kiosk, reservations can get you  what’s called “flight benefits” which is basically standby, and you do not have to have the employee with you to fly, all you have to do is make sure you’re listed on as standby & just go and see if you’re able to make the flight. In some cases you could even get first class, business class, basically any seat available on the aircraft, and seating depends on your seniority(the longer you’ve worked for airlines the higher the seniority and the higher your name is on the list for standby which determines whether you’re able to get a seat on the plane)

Molives is one of the only flight attendants in the world to be able to vlog this process his concept is simple every once in a while, he shows up at the airport live streams off Instagram ask's the audience vote to wherever we want him to go he calls this series mystery flights.

So please go and check him out on YouTube if you haven’t already.

I know we aren’t going to be travelling anytime soon in this pandemic. And if you think you might want to save these information as a checklist on your memo/notes app then download my free travel checklist.

The more I travel the more I realize that everybody around the world just wants the same thing, Human connection  and that universal desire when you actually go out of your way to meet people with different background and cultural differences. So I hope if it wasn’t already in your plans to travel after covid that I have convinced you to make some.

Why everyone needs a credit card

     “Who doesn’t like money”

We all live in a world where we need money more than we need food to get through each day but how much do we actually know about it. I always think money and food are very similar.

when it comes to food we don’t track our calorie intake, eat more than we know, Does it sound familiar, it should.  When it comes to money, we don’t track our spending, spend more than we realize or admit.

Most of us fall into one of the two categories when it comes to money; we either ignore it and feel guilty, or we obsess over financial details by arguing interest rates and risks about different investment opportunities. Both options get you the same results …….

    None.

When we talk finance with people, we somehow feel satisfied. We feel as we are really expressing ourselves, and it’s a good feeling. We feel like we are getting somewhere. The problem is that this feeling is totally illusionary. Focusing on these details is the easiest way to get nothing done, to trick you into to believing you know something you don’t, it absolves you from actually having to do anything. when was the last time you sat with your friends and talked about eating healthy, about fitness or finance and did you go to a run afterwards or did you look for investment options, Of course not.

The truth is most of us don’t need financial advisors to help us get rich, its just what we choose to believe. You just need to know how to get started.

I’ve heard people say “our education system didn’t teach this”. Its easy for the people in their twenties to wish that their college had offered some personal finance training. Guess what? Most colleges do offer these classes, you just didn’t take them.

But never mind if you are one also one of those people. Because I will be launching a 30 day money challenge to attain financial independence. And its free (so stay updated and subscribe so you don’t miss out this opportunity).

I believe in small steps. I want to reduce the number of choices that paralyze us. Its more important to get started than to spend an exhaustive amount of time researching the best fund in the universe.

It is no surprise that the earlier one starts financial planning; the lesser the burden on saving each month will be. This is possible due to the power of compounding, a mesmerizing yet rather simple concept in finance.

    Smart Shreya

    Dumb Dave

When beginning to invest, the person is……

    25 years old

    35 years old

    Each person invests 100/month for…

    10 years

    30 years

With an 8% rate of return, at age 65, their accounts are worth…

    349,856 rupees.

    The value of starting early

271,879 rupees. Even though he invested for three times as long, he’s still behind by 80,000

Now that you know the importance of starting financial planning early, you need to know where to start. Any financial book will teach you to choose the right bank accounts, open an investment account and some other common stuff that will help you automate your financial infrastructure but today we will talk about a more controversial topic in personal finance, Credit cards.

The first thing that I did when I turned 18 was set up my bank account and get my credit card, unlike most of my friends who preferred to get a drivers license instead…

People love to choose from a sexy investment plan when they want to get rich. But they often ignore something that is so simple, so basic, that it just doesn’t seem important: their credit.

Surprisingly credit is one of the most vital factors in getting rich, but since its hard to understand , we often overlook it entirely. Credit has a far greater impact on your finances than saving few bucks a day in your piggy bank.

Credit comes in many forms(car loans, mortgages ,etc ) but we are going to start with credit cards.

Credit cards are very powerful objects that has the power to ruin your life, if you don’t know how to use them. So I’m going to tell you why you need a credit if you already don’t have one.

but before you start listing ALL the reasons you think, having a credit card is a bad decision let me help you out and do that for you

almost everyone has heard a bad story about late fees, unauthorized charges, or overspending and getting buried in credit card debt. And not surprisingly, most of our parents turn into rage monsters like the hulk when they hear credit cards. ”using credit cards is the worst financial decision you can make”, they shout. ”cut them into pieces!!!”

and I’m not saying that they are a gift from heaven in the form of a short term loan either.

The truth about credit cards lies somewhere in between these two extremes.

benefits of having a credit card

    - the main reason will always be to build credit, which will help you in the long run.

    - Emergency source of funds

    - Rewards; you are going to be using this cards for a while. So make sure the rewards it offers is something you actually want. I like to travel a lot, so I got a credit card which gives me free companion tickets, free flights, and points for every money I spend and every mile I fly. But if you don’t like to travel, this card wouldn’t make sense for you. Basically find one that gives you something you value.

    - Mobilize the credit card’s army for you.(how???)

They provide amazing consumer protection. You might of hear about automatic warranty doubling, fraud / Theft Protection but they provide lot more than that..

    - if you get sick and can’t travel, your airline will charge you huge fees to re-book your tickets. Just call your credit card company and ask for trip cancellation insurance, and they will cover those fee charges. -the amount they cover per year varies from company to company.

    - Concierge services: can’t find the tickets for the band/rock show you want go to. Just call your credit card company and ask the concierge to try and find some. They charge you but they get it done when no one can.

If you still don’t know what kind of rewards your credit card is giving, just call them and ask for it. It’s that simple.

Don’t make the mistake of paying for your friend with your credit card and keeping the cash…(I had to add this point)

Don’t do the same dumb thing I keep doing. Few times I go out to eat, the bill comes and everyone takes out cash, and I realized that I can just pay on my credit card and earn some credit and miles too. Here’s where things go horribly wrong. You wake up the next day thinking, “wow, I have extra cash in my wallet” NO!!! go and put it in a bank.

So there you have it, all the reasons why you should and shouldn’t have a credit card.

In short, getting a  credit card lets you get started early, earning more rewards in the process and getting a better credit score. Thus saving you money in the process as well as in the future.

    I journaled for 30 days

At the start of every year people around the world make a new year’s resolution. you know exactly what you want in life,  maybe you want to eat health or read more or maybe you finally want to learn a new language but if you’re anything like me then you set goals like this each year with the best of intensions and maybe even start off great but eventually you loose rhythm of whatever it is that you’re doing and fail within a few months.

The whole taking one step forward and two steps backward pattern is getting old.

You’ve been telling yourself “today is the day!” only to fail a few weeks later.

When there is a gap between who you are and who you intend to be, ur unhappy, exhausted and regretful. You feel like a fraud to yourself, and probably to the people around you too.

Most people live their lives on other people’s terms. Their days are spent achieving other people’s goals and submitting to other people’s agendas.

We have grown comfortable with reacting when it comes to our life. We relentlessly react at everything life throws at us instead of commanding every walking and sleeping moment of our life.

We need to be able to able to remember the goals we set for ourselves, take control of every action instead of just reacting to what life throws at you.

    But how…….

“If you asked me what’s the one most important skill I could share with someone seeking to live a more intentional life, my answer would definitely be how to start journaling.”

    - I honestly don’t remember

(but I’m glad I came across it)

    According to PsychCentral,

keeping a journal can help you Clarify your thoughts and feelings, reduce stress, resolve disagreements with others solve problems more effectively and most importantly, you get to know yourself better. It’s a habit that will empower you to live true to yourself, teach you to make more intentional choices, ground you when you feel overwhelmed or out of control.

C’mon ….I know I’m a sceptic but even you must think that achieving all this by scribbling in a diary once a day sounds no less than the possibility of me seeing a grown man flying in the sky tomorrow.

    But is it ??? …..

I've heard people talk about the benefits of journaling every day it's helped them improve clarity focus it's helped them keep track of their goals and get all of their thoughts down onto the page so I thought why not try it out for 30 days and see if I could see those benefits as well but if I'm being completely honest I couldn't help but think that it was complete waste of time and it was until it wasn't.

There are many different types of journal(yes I checked..). You could have a dream journal to keep a track of the things that happen during your sleep, a food journal to keep a track of everything you put in your body , a workout journal to track your fitness progress and a bullet journal to track your task habits and prioritise your work throughout your day.

Basically it’s a way to chart your progress and hopefully notice some growth.

It is true that we easily get knocked off course from our goals not intentionally but just because we loose track of the idea or motivation that made us start in the first place.

So to find out for myself I took on the challenge to journal for 30 days and track my overall progress in productivity and to confront things I otherwise wouldn’t and hopefully to understand and get a clear idea of my own thought patterns.

So my thought process was if I could do it for 30 days then it might be long enough to see the benefits

So I started writing each day, set aside 10 mins to fill up a few pages. I mostly wrote about all the tasks I did during the day, this was the first month that I had prepared a new routine for myself to follow through the whole day so a bullet journal proved very useful as I got to track how good the routine I made for myself was actually working for me. I hoped to compare the final results with the goals that I set for myself at the start of the month.

I felt more and more like this was something that I had to do and not like something I wanted to do. I kept forgetting, saving it for the last minute.

The small benefit I saw early on was that it helped with my perfectionism .As a chronic over thinker , it was therapeutic in a way to just write what was on my mind without having the chance to edit later like I would do if I were writing a mail to someone.

As time progressed, this journal became more than what I intended for it.

It became a private place for all my thoughts, a place to keep track of all your ideas, looking back most pages that I filled were just utter vomit, nothing useful but I know that at least it was something true. Something that I would probably never share with another human or even me for that matter under different circumstances.

Let me share a page from my journal,

So this was April 20th , I just came back from my college and I write” I’m really hoping that after a good night’s rest. Ill wake up feeling like myself again. I don’t feel like getting back to work or to talk to anyone. My mind and body feel completely unsettled. There’s a tension, a nervousness, anxiety. I hate this feeling. I just want to feel completely normal again. Feel like I have something in control again.” I know I must sound like every other person right now but when you feel like this, its all you can think about. Simply writing this down didn’t fix my anxiety. It didn’t make anything better but it helped me to accept how I was feeling. It stopped me from running away from the thoughts I was having or pretending like they didn’t exist.

I continued to journal for the next few weeks as I recovered and gave myself the time and space to get back on my feet. I had my ups and downs. Things got so much better. I went from feeling sick, dizzy and having zero motivation to rebuilding my routine, my fitness and getting back to work.

Writing this post now after about 4 months, my anxiety has reduced. It pops up every now and again but it’s not getting in the way of my life . also I have picked up a new hobby, a passion I guess I always had but never the courage to purse before . I’m hoping this hobby will serve as an anker or a reminder that “you can always get back up” for me. I will tell you more about this later. But now lets get back to journaling

Among other things journaling has been a helpful tool for me to gain clarity when my mental health was at its worst.

So as I said its been 4 months since then and I’m still writing, all I can say is that Journaling is a life-changing habit that:

empowers you to live true to yourself

teaches you to make more intentional choices

grounds you when you feel overwhelmed or out of control

… and so much more! Without a doubt, creating a journaling habit is one of the best things I’ve ever done for myself and it’s a powerful tool for simple and intentional living.

For some people, it’s about colourful pens, and for others, it’s a way of recording your daily activities (“Dear Diary” style)—but ultimately, no matter how you format it, journaling is about self-awareness.

You should start journaling because, When we’re busy, we’re consumed by our daily tasks and it’s easy to lose sight of what’s important.

Journaling helps combat this short-sightedness by encouraging us to step back and consider the big picture. It's good to sit down and take a minute to reflect on how things are going.

Think of it like carrying out a research project about yourself; you’re observing your actions and your feelings so you can get to know yourself better. Ultimately, this self-awareness is the key to getting off the treadmill and living an intentional, meaningful life.

    “TO DEFINE WHAT MATTERS”

    “TO UNRAVEL YOUR FEELINGS”

    “TO EXPLORE + EXPERIMENT
